What Is IPTV Catch-Up TV?
IPTV Catch-Up TV is a cloud-based DVR feature that lets you rewind and replay live television broadcasts that aired within the past 1 to 7 days. Unlike a traditional DVR — a physical hard drive under your TV that you had to remember to configure before leaving the house — catch-up recording happens automatically on the provider's servers.
You do not schedule anything. The server records continuously. When you want to watch something that aired three days ago, you navigate back in your EPG, click play, and the stream starts from that point. It is a 7-day time machine built directly into your TV guide.
How Cloud Catch-Up Replaced Physical DVR
A decade ago, cable providers charged $15–20/month to rent a bulky hard drive that sat under your TV. If you forgot to hit Record, you missed the show. The drive filled up. You deleted things to make room. It was genuinely bad.
Cloud catch-up offloads the entire storage requirement to the provider's data centres. A Fire TV Stick has roughly 8 GB of usable internal storage — barely enough for two movies. The catch-up archive for a single live channel over seven days can run into terabytes. By storing it server-side, NovaStream lets you replay from any supported channel without using a byte of local storage.
How to Identify Catch-Up Channels in TiviMate and Smarters
In TiviMate Premium, catch-up channels display a small clock or rewind icon next to the channel logo in the EPG grid. Navigate back in the guide using the left arrow key — past content that is available for replay will be highlighted rather than greyed out. Click to start playback from that timestamp.
In IPTV Smarters Pro, the Catch-Up section is a dedicated tab in the main menu alongside Live TV, Movies, and Series. Browse by channel and date, then select the time slot you want to replay.
Not all channels support catch-up — availability depends on licensing. The most-watched networks (major US and UK channels, sports channels) typically have full 7-day coverage. Lesser-viewed channels may have 24–48 hours or none at all.
The Role of EPG Synchronisation
Catch-up is completely dependent on a correctly synchronised EPG (Electronic Program Guide). When you click "play" on a show that aired at 9 PM yesterday, the IPTV player sends a timestamp request to the server. The server finds the corresponding video block and starts streaming from that point. If the EPG timestamps are wrong by even a few minutes, you may start mid-show or at the wrong programme entirely.
This is why EPG quality is one of the most important indicators of a well-maintained IPTV service. A broken EPG is usually a sign of a poorly maintained panel. Contact NovaStream on WhatsApp if you notice EPG discrepancies — our team can refresh your EPG source immediately.
